Philippine Coins: 1991 1 Piso Improved Flora and Fauna Series

From 1991 to 1994, the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas minted a new series of coins. This series was the predecessor of the current New BSP Series. It was called the Improved Flora and Fauna Series or IFF for short and features flora and fauna found in the Philippines. This post features the 1 Peso coin.

The fauna featured here is commonly known as the Tamaraw. It is a dwarf buffalo endemic only to the island of Mindoro. Its scientific name was updated to Bubalus mindorensis. Its is critically endangered because its habitat has been destroyed by humans. Click the scientific name above for more info.

Coins from this series are no longer legal tender and fairly easy to obtain.
