Philippine Coins: 1991 2 Piso Improved Flora and Fauna Series

From 1991 to 1994, the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas minted a new series of coins. This series was the predecessor of the current New BSP Series. It was called the Improved Flora and Fauna Series or IFF for short and features flora and fauna found in the Philippines. This post features the 2 Peso coin.

The flora featured is the common coconut. Of course this is not endemic to the Philippines, but its a very common plant. Its is also called the plant with a thousand uses or sometimes the tree of life. Click the scientific name above for more info.

There was once a joke about this coin and the 1 peso coin.  If I remember it correctly it goes like this.

“Have you seen a 3 peso coin?”
“No. There is no such thing.”
“Oh, but there is.”
“Alright. Show me.”
Brings out a 1 peso coin and a 2 peso coin
“Just tie the Tamaraw to the coconut tree.”

Coins from this series are no longer legal tender and fairly easy to obtain.
