Philippine Coins: 2017 5 Sentimo New Generation Currency

The 5 Sentimo of the New Generation Currency were minted some time  in 2017. However, I have only come across these in circulation at around early 2018. It follows the same general design as the new 5 Piso released on November of 2017.

Specifications:

Diameter: 16mm
Thickness: 1.5mm
Metalic Composition: Nickel-clad steel

I have come across this coin in circulation around early 2018. I have only obtained these coins in supermarkets and drug stores, the only establishments using Sentimo coins nowadays. It’s design is also minimalist like most coins in this series. It has a reeded edge or milled edge.

The flower on the reverse is the Kapal-kapal baging. A Google search of Kapal-kapal baging yielded some interesting results. The scientific name of kapal-kapal baging is Calotropis gigantea. However, the flower depicted in the 5 Sentimo coin looks nothing like the images that google coughed up during the search. It is also interesting to note that the word “baging” is a Filipino world that means vine, but the plant Calotropis gigantea is not a vine, but a shrub. I have come to the conclusion that the plant depicted on this coin is a different plant altogether from the plant that I found online having the same name. Click here to see what Wikipedia has on Kapal-kapal baging.

This coin officially replaces the 5 Sentimo of the New BSP coin series which is still legal tender as of this post.

Enjoy!
