Philippine Banknotes: 100 Piso New Generation Currency – 5 Types

There are 5 versions of 100 Piso NGC banknote that I have observed so far. The NGC banknote series started in 2010 to replace the now demonetized New Design series.

Version 1

This is the original variant released in 2010.

Obverse: Notice the blue hue on the right side.
Reverse

It may not seem very apparent in the images above, but the version 1 of this banknote is more blue than muave (Purple). The color was changed not long after due to the fact that it is often mistaken for the 1000 Piso bill that is primarily blue. This led to the creation of version 2. The reverse side of all the versions are the same, but version 1 is more blue. The rest of the versions share the same design and color.

Version 2

A recolored 100 Piso banknote that is now more purple than the original version above. The blue coloration was replaced to mitigate the banknote being mistaken for 1000 Piso.

Obverse: Revised version that is now more purple.

While version 1 is still legal tender and is still in circulation as of the writing of this post, it was replaced by this new color design that is more muave (pale purple). The color of the reverse side has also been changed to a more purple hue and remains the same for versions 2 to 5. This design would persist until 2020 when the “Enhanced” versions of the NGC series banknotes were released thereby giving rise to Version 3.

Version 3

The “Enhanced” version of the 100 Piso NGC banknote was released during the height of the pandemic.

Still the same color theme as Version 2, but has added security features. Most notable changes are the bands on the left and right of the obverse and an improved windowed security thread.

Version 4

This one is the same as version 2. This is not the “Enhanced” version, but with a new BSP logo. From my observation, this was released just this year (2023).

The timing of release of these banknotes seems to coincide with the change in government leaders – new President and new BSP Governor.

Version 5

This is version 3 (“Enhanced”) with new BSP logo.

This has the same “Enhanced” security features, but with the new BSP logo.

Here are all the banknotes from version 1 to 5

All versions are still legal tender and in circulation. One just needs to be aware of the blue 100 Piso banknote (Version 1) so as not to mistake it with the 1000 Piso bill.

Enjoy!
