Banknote Overprints
Banknotes with overprints are somewhat like commemorative coins. They commemorate certain events, people, and places. There are not as many commemorative banknotes as there are coins, but they have become collectibles too.
Most overprints in the Philippines were done on the New Design banknotes from the 5 Peso up to the 1000 Peso notes. There are official overprints and there are unofficial overprints as well.
Most of these overprints command a relatively modest price compared to their coin counterparts mainly because banknotes cannot be printed on silver or gold paper unlike coins that can be minted on precious metals. However, over prints do become expensive when they go in combination with a star note, specimen note, or low serial number note.
This site features some of the latest commemorative overprints. Its monetary value do not go much higher than its face value. Overprints don’t have a higher buying power than their regular counterparts, but add in the collectors value and you got something else.

Hello. I just discovered your blog when I was trying to search for answers about the bank note overprints. I have quite a collection of these and since all of them are going to be demonetized soon, can you tell me if these would have any monetary value in the future? Is it worth keeping? Thanks for your time.

Hello fellow collector. Thank you for the kind comment. I hope this blog has helped you in your research. It’s true that the overprints will be demonetized by December 15 of this year and by then the monetary value will be zero, but the collectors value may rise since these overprints will become a rarity in the next few years. Yes you should keep them. From what I observed, the 1998 Kalayaan centennial overprint on the 100 peso bill, and the 50th anniversary of BSP on the 50 Peso bill command a higher premium than other overprints. If you have complete sets, that would be even more valuable to collectors. Starnotes are also very collectible. Keep an eye out for those too.

Hello.
