Philippine Coins: 2015 500 Piso Pope Francis Commemorative Coin

The specification says that its made of “Nordic Gold”. Please note that the name nordic gold is just a designation for a certain type of alloy developed for the use in Swedish coins and later for EURO coins. It does not contain any gold, but it is resistant to tarnish.

The coin comes in its own display box. It seems to have a redwood finish and opens like a clam shell.

Inserted in the lid is the info card.

The coin is encased in what I can only assume as acrylic. It rests on a cutout covered in blue felt. The coin can be handled with ease since it is in a protective case. Be warned the clear case can scratch easily. Since the coin is gold plated, it should not tarnish unless the gold plating somehow peels off.

The coin is legal tender and can be used for purchasing, but I don’t think anyone in their right mind will spend this coin for its face value.

This coin is no longer available from BSP. Originally priced at Php 1000 for the package. Today, these can be purchased from coin shops and collectors. Expect a premium over the original price in case you decide to buy one…and no, my coin is not for sale.

Enjoy!
