Philippine Coins: 2015 10 Piso Miguel Malvar Commemorative Coin

I was in for a big surprise to find out that Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas released a new commemorative coin on December 22, 2015. I was lucky enough to get a couple of them on December 23, thanks to an officemate.

Here is the 10 Piso Miguel Malvar 150 taon commemorative.

This commemorates the General’s 150th birthday, being born on September 27, 1865.

Heneral Miguel Malvar y Carpio served during the Philippine Revolution and during the Philippine-American war. He took over as commander of the revolutionary forces following the capture of Emilio Aguinaldo in 1901. He is unofficially recognized as the second President of the Philippines. He would be third if one counts Andres Bonifacio as the first President.

The coin has a some interesting features.

In the photo below, you will notice that “Miguel” is in script. It may be his signature.

In the photo below, the words “NG PILIPINAS” and “10 PISO” are stamped in or recessed. The word “REPUBLIKA” is embossed or raised. Part of the foreground is filled with repeating text, “HENERAL MIGUEL MALVAR 150 TAON”.

The BSP mint mark can be seen at the top of the coin. In the photo below, the mint mark looks to be recessed as well.

The BSP logo beside the image of Malvar based on his monument in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. He is depicted with saber and pistol in his right and left hand respectively.

In the photo below, the texts, “1”, “1865”, and “MALVAR” are recessed. While “50”, “TAON”, and “2015” are embossed.

The coin has a relatively simplistic design compared to the commemorative of Mabini and Bonifacio.

Enjoy!

  2. 10 million pieces are minted but still very rare to hunt

  3. Really upset that it’s almost March and I’ve yet to get my hands on one of these. Living in the Visayas is hard when BSP release new commemorative coins. They are very hard to come by!

  4. Do this coin has an equivalent amount since it is not commonly used? Or can I sell this coin? For what amount?
