Philippine Coins: 1991 5 Piso Improved Flora and Fauna Series

From 1991 to 1994, the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas minted a new series of coins. This series was the predecessor of the current New BSP Series. It was called the Improved Flora and Fauna Series or IFF for short and features flora and fauna found in the Philippines. This post features the 5 Peso coin.

I always thought the plant at the back of this coin was the sampaguita, but i was gravely mistaken. It’s the Narra, the National Tree of the Philippines. It is not endemic to the Philippines, but its wood is highly prized and very expensive. Click the scientific name above for more info.

According to Numista.com, this coin has a rarity index of 52/100. 100 being ultra rare and 0 being very common. Its worth about Php 250.00 (about $5.oo US) on Ebay.

  - hi! just saw your reply. yeah, i do collect postcards with stamp. Just started my postcrossing account, just want to give it a try although i am collecting before unused postcard. 😀 i am exploring the possibility to concentrate nlng sa banknotes and postcards with stamp for now. coins are getting expensive and i am financially tight this past few months.
    
    got some extra commemorative banknotes pro as i browse your portal meron kna nung mga extra ko especially the pdic, got 10 sa central bank and i don’t want to sell it. just want to swap it with fellow collectors who just started there collection like me.

  - The PDIC was given to me by my officemate who knew i was into collecting. I didn’t even know PDIC overprint came out until he showed me the banknote. I immediately swapped an old 50 for it.
    I was wondering how do you buy banknotes from Bangko Sentral? I saw their site offered KBL banknotes and older coins too. When I visited one time, i didnt even know where to go much less how to buy.

  Unfortunately, the 1991 5 peso coins have been demonetized for a long time. You cannot have them changed in the bank anymore. However you may sell them to collectors or in shops that buy coins.
